We have started our unit on light in science! Today we experimented with items and a flashlight to determine what items are transparent, translucent, or opaque. We recorded our findings in our science notebooks! ...
In math today, we used the fraction knowledge we’ve been working on the past few days to create a fraction kite! We used different colors to divide our kites into four EQUAL parts and then report our fractions!
We used our knowledge of doubles facts to help us with fractions today! With our fraction cookies, we divided our chocolate chips equally so it would be fair when we shared with a friend. Who knew fractions could be so delicious? Yum!
We started a new math unit on fractions today by sorting symmetrical and asymmetrical shapes! We decided which shapes could be split into EQUAL parts - and which cannot. We then read Give Me Half by Stuart Murphy, which talked all about fair ways to divide a pizza. 1-D did a wonderful job with this introduction to fractions! ...
We had so much fun celebrating 100th Day of School by imagining what we would look like when we’re 100 -years-old. We also guessed what we might be doing!
We practiced a new accuracy strategy in reading workshop today. Sometimes when you come across a word you don’t know, it can be helpful to skip the word, then come back. Other words and pictures on the page can clue us into the word.
We had so much fun learning about kite flying today! We even got to watch a kite flying competition and create our own dragon kites! We learned that people believe kites chase away bad luck!
We had so much fun learning to Chinese Ribbon dance today. We want to thank the PTO Arts Council and Chiao Bin Huang for this amazing opportunity!
1D had a great time visiting all of the First Grade classrooms to celebrate Chinese New Year!
In math, we are practicing combining numbers quickly with the game Chinese New Year Bump, combinations of 10 with I Have/I Need and Shake and Spill, and time to the hour with Time Barrier.
